Savita Kalhan, author of Girl in the Broken Mirror and her most recent book That Asian Kid, gave a talk about her books and ran a creative workshop with a group of our year 9 students. Pupils taking part in her creative writing workshops learned how to craft a story, and also how to collaborate with a partner. Developing listening, reading and writing skills were all part of the creative writing workshop.

In the creative workshop, pupils were given writing prompts and exercises to help them generate new material, and they then shared their work with the group for constructive criticism and feedback. This was a valuable learning experience, as pupils got a chance to see how their writing is received by others and received suggestions for how to make it better. Pupils also explored the different genres of fiction, from contemporary, adventure, science fiction/dystopian, magic/fantasy, horror, historical to ghost stories and more.

About the workshop Savita Kalhan said “It was an absolute delight to work with the amazing Year 9s, who did outstanding work – so creative and imaginative. Thanks to the school’s wonderful librarian – such commitment and enthusiasm – lucky students and lucky school to have him!”

Overall, the creative writing workshop was a fun and rewarding way for our pupils to grow as writers and connect with other creative minds.
